Kate Bedford is a painter and educator based in Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland. Over the past 15 years, she has developed and refined a practice shaped by an evolving philosophical perspective. She graduated with a BVA from AUT in 2009 and an MFA from Elam in 2019. Her work has been selected as a finalist for the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Awards and the Parkin Drawing Prize and included in various group shows.
Her practice is an ongoing exploration of diverse materials and media, investigating how they interact to reflect, absorb and respond to light. Each work evolves through a process shaped by the qualities of its substrate, with the preparation of the surface holding equal significance to the layers of paint applied. Materiality becomes both a means of inquiry and a language through which deeper spiritual concerns are revealed. Through the interplay of surface, light and matter, her work seeks to give form to the intangible, embracing the invisible as an enduring search for meaning.
Bedford’s practice draws on research into ecosophy, Indigenous knowledge and storytelling, grand narratives and Romanticism. Her paintings function as portals—spaces in which time and perception seem to collapse. Imagery remains deliberately elusive, with forms softly blurring, smudging and overlapping. This ambiguity suggests that conscious perception is inherently unstable: what we think we see may be only a fragment of a deeper, more fluid reality. Within Bedford’s paintings, the boundaries between object and atmosphere, material and energy, and self and environment gradually dissolve, inviting the viewer to contemplate a world in which all things are interconnected.
